Tuesday's slice of bread

A weekly post premised on this: Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord (Prov. 16:20)

Recently I posted a piece on inheritance.  Today my focus is on treasure.  First are five passages from the Old Testament:

"Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding; for her proceeds are better than the profit of silver, and her gain than fine gold.  She is more precious than rubies, and all things you may desire cannot compare with her" (Proverbs 3:13-15).

"Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death" (Proverbs 11:4; referring of course to eternity, the wrath of God, and the righteousness of Christ).

"Better is a little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure with trouble" (Proverbs 15:16).

"I have not departed from the commandments of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food" (Job 23:12).

"Wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times, and the strength of salvation; the fear of the LORD is His treasure" (Isaiah 33:6; a promise yet to be realized).

Then seven selections from the New Testament:

"Do not lay up for yourself treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not  break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:19-21).

"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it goes and sells all that he has and buys that field" (Matthew 13:44).

"The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of the evil treasure of his heart produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks" (Luke 6:45).

"Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.  Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves moneybags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Luke 12:32-34).

"For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pieced themselves through with many sorrows" (1 Timothy 6:10; it is not money but the love of money that is the root of all kinds of evil).

"Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, not to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.  Let them do good, that they may be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold of eternal life" (1 Timothy 6:17-19; this good foundation is not the same as the foundation of the Lord Jesus Christ, the no other foundation to which Paul refers in 1 Corinthians 3:11).

"Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have.  For He Himself has said, 'I will never leave you, nor forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5).

And for believers this promise: "An inheritance, incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time" (1 Peter 1:4-5).
